Name: Greats of Jazz & Vaudeville: A Victrola Trolley Tour
    Date: August 11, 2018
    Time: 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM EDT
    Event Description:
Join us as we visit and celebrate some of the greatest performers from 100 years ago and their indelible musical contributions to jazz, pop and vaudeville history. Each stop will include a brief talk about the entertainer PLUS a 78rpm record played on an antique crank-up Victrola as an aural dimension to the tour. Artists include: Nat M. Wills, Fritz Kriesler, George M. Cohan, Irene and Vernon Castle, Nora Bayes, Bert Williams, W.C Handy, King Oliver, Duke Ellington, and Irving Berlin. This tour is 3 hours long and involves short periods of walking to and from the trolley and between sites. Tour is led by Michael Cumella (aka Phonograph DJ MAC), host of The Antique Phonograph Music Program and Centennial Songs on WFMU since 1995. MAC is the creator of the Phonograph DJ concept and is active in the live presentation of pre-electric 78rpm records on crank-up gramophones. MAC has done numerous presentations on the early history of sound and music from grade schools to college level seminars along with consultations and prop rentals to the NYC film and TV industry. MAC is also active in restoring phonographs and makes house calls to diagnose machines. We will be meeting at the Jerome Avenue and Bainbridge Avenue gate at 12:45 PM and the Trolley Tour will begin at 1:00 PM. There are only 30 seats so tickets must be purchased in advance. We look forward to hosting you.
